For many children, kindergarten is the first experience they have in a classroom setting. The kindergarten teachers here at Mokapu strive to provide all of our early learners with a fun, nurturing, and hands-on kindergarten experience. We have 7 classes that make up the kindergarten team. We believe that the best learning takes place through differentiated and developmentally appropriate practices. We also believe that a partnership between home and school will help each child to have a positive and successful year in kindergarten.
We follow the Common Core State Standards for language arts and math. We use McGraw-Hill Reading Wonders curriculum for language arts to teach students phonological and phonemic awareness, oral vocabulary, high-frequency words, speaking & listening, and reading through leveled readers. We recently implemented Lucy Calkins Units of Study for Writing in Kindergarten. We use ORIGO Stepping Stones curriculum for math to teach students number sense through counting & writing numbers, understanding addition & subtraction, composing & decomposing numbers, measurement, classifying numbers & objects, and shapes.
We follow Hawaii Content & Performance Standards III to create thematic units for socials studies and science for topics such as family & friends, rules & responsibility, 5 senses, plants & animals, feelings, holidays, goal setting, our community, weather & seasons, and health.
