CURRICULUM: In Fifth Grade we review concepts studied in previous grades and expand our music literacy to absolute pitch through the use of recorder. We will begin with just two notes, C and A and slowly add one note at a time so that students can learn to read the absolute pitch on a staff without having to write in the note names. There will be a focus on improvisation and composition based on class work. Playing is required for grades with anywhere from 1-3 belt tests per quarter. Extra credit is also available for students to master the skills we are learning. Recorders are purchased by the school and students are asked to purchase the recorder from the school. These are the two main reasons for this decision:
Intonation can be an issue. When +/- 30 recorders are playing at the same time, minute changes in intonation are evident and can be painful to the ears. When we use the same recorder brand, this intonation issue is much less of a problem.
I use white or cream colored recorders so that it is easier to trouble shoot problems when listening to students one to one.
Students will be graded on participation, performance, composition/improvisation, and critical thinking/peer assessments. In quarters 2 and 4 they will also be assessed on stage performances. Below, you will find the link for their recorder packet. This is all the material we will use through the school year. If it is lost, please reprint it. I will only print one per student, per year. Recorder portfolios will be turned in toward the end of each quarter to be graded. All assignments must remain in the folder.
PERFORMANCES: Every year your child attends Mokapu there will be two quarters with an emphasis on performing as well as preparation for music literacy. Our Winter Program is usually during our last week of school in December. This year it will be on Wed, Dec 20, 2017. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer whole school performances in the evening because our school is so large and there is not a venue on our side of the island that can house both our students and their parents. As a result, we have two identical morning shows, of which you may attend one or watch a live stream of the performance through our Mokapu DOE Youtube account. Information regarding these performances is sent out on a monthly basis, with more detailed information arriving by the beginning of December.
We have bi-annual performances in the spring that we rotate. This year will be our cultural May Day program and you won't want to miss it. The date is set for May 25, 2018. On our non-May Day years, we will be having mini-musicals (short 30 minute shows for K-2 to perform in.)
