CURRICULUM: In Sixth Grade we review concepts studied in previous grades and expand our music literacy and absolute pitch learning (which started in 5th grade) through the use of ukulele. This will be an introduction to ukulele playing. The students will become acquainted with the instrument, and the vocabulary used with the ukulele, and playing through both plucking with note reading and strumming chords. The students will begin to work on music theory and the ideas of chordal accompaniments. Students will begin with open string reading and slowly add stopped notes on the first few frets. Chords begin with a minor and then progress to a C Major sequence (C M, F M, G M, G7 ). Students will progress form 1 chord songs, to two chord (I V or I IV), to three chord (I IV V7) and the 12 Bar Blues progression, and then to four chord songs (I IV V vi). Students will be graded on participation, performance, composition/improvisation, and critical thinking/peer assessments. In quarters 2 and 4 they will also be assessed on stage performances. Students are requested to bring a three prong portfolio for music. All music papers are to be placed inside of this portfolio.
PERFORMANCES: Every year your child attends Mokapu there will be two quarters with an emphasis on performing as well as preparation for music literacy. Our Winter Program is usually during our last week of school in December. This year it will be on Wed, Dec 20, 2017. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer whole school performances in the evening because our school is so large and there is not a venue on our side of the island that can house both our students and their parents. As a result, we have two identical morning shows, of which you may attend one or watch a live stream of the performance through our Mokapu DOE Youtube account. Information regarding these performances is sent out on a monthly basis, with more detailed information arriving by the beginning of December.
We have bi-annual performances in the spring that we rotate. This year will be our cultural May Day program and you won't want to miss it. The date is set for May 25, 2018. On our non-May Day years, we will be having mini-musicals (short 30 minute shows for K-2 to perform in.)
